And Nuclear Winter Came

Erdogan described Russia's activity in the Middle East as a threat to the world. However it is not Russia but Turkey that has turned into a trouble spot, jeopardizing peace and stability around the globe.

It was not Russia but Turkey that bought oil from Islamic State. It is not Moscow but Ankara that finances and supports Salafi imams or the Muslim Brotherhood adherents, who preach violence and hate in some of the European mosques as well. And it is not Turkey but Russia that obtained military and political cooperation of Iran, secured diplomatic assistance of China, received support of Egypt, Jordan, UAE and Israel. The Kurds too often look up to Moscow now. And despite some flashy statements America's opinion is also changing...

No wonder, Turkey's leader and entire military and political elite of that country feel angry, alarmed, confused and insulted! Supported by the United States Turkey was an active player in the Arab Spring events, it always felt its significance and aspired to be a leading regional power. Yet, it got the war on its borders, an unfolding civil war in the east of the country and after the incident with the Russian Su-24M jet it actually lost the trust of Washington which prefers untangling the Middle East knot in partnership with Moscow.

There are only bellicose statements that remained of the former confidence. However this is what poses a threat at least by unpredictability!

It is absolutely clear today that the hegemonic actions and ambitions of Mr. Erdogan are a threat to the world order. Activity of Turkey's leader has led to the immigration crisis in the EU. Turkey uses migrants to put pressure on Europe and the world and tip the balance of power in its favor. Ankara has admitted two million refugees and threatens to open the gates to Europe if Brussels fails to provide financial support and diplomatic assistance on the Syrian issue.

Anti-Russian and anti-Syrian rhetoric of the Turkish authorities pushes Turkey towards a great war which will inflame regional countries as well as those far away from it. Understanding their mistakes and losing support of their allies Turkey's ministers and generals heat up the hysteria of hatred and fear, they don't talk about a simple war, they dream of the third world war!! What else can the militaristic calls of Ankara to send ground forces to Syria mean? Nevertheless in spite of the numerous statements, Ankara pursues its own interests which are not consistent with the US standpoint. To achieve the goals Ankara plans to escalate the situation. By invading Syria, by bombing Syrian cities and infrastructure Ankara openly sets up Washington and NATO while hiding behind Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty.

There is still a great danger of new provocative acts of Ankara like the one when it shot down the Russian aircraft, however the international community's responsibility for what is going on in the region increases by the day. All that is left to do is hope that common sense and self-possession will get the better of it, and NATO will put its unpredictable ally to where it belongs...
